On August 4, we brewed “Blue Sky and Sea Beer” (Weizen), Helios Craft Beer’s No. 1 best-selling beer!

The process shown in the video is called “mashing.” This is the stage where malted barley (malt) is heated in hot water, allowing enzymes in the malt to break down starches into sugars. This process is known as saccharification.
As the starches are converted into sugars, the mixture takes on a porridge-like consistency. This mixture is called “mash,” which is where the term “mashing” comes from.
The next step is to extract the wort, the sweet liquid that will eventually become beer, from the mash. Hops are then added, and the wort is boiled and cooled before being fermented and transformed into beers with a wide variety of distinctive styles.
But even during the mashing process, the flavor of the finished beer can change depending on the temperature and duration of the mash. In fact, the ingredients themselves—including the type of malt and the water used—can also have a significant impact on the final flavor.
The world of craft beer is incredibly deep and fascinating, with more than 150 different beer styles said to exist around the world.
And thanks to the creativity and ideas of brewers, a brand-new beer recipe could be taking shape right here, right now.
The second photo shows the spent grain, including the grain husks and other remnants left behind after the wort has been extracted.
Although it is called “spent grain,” it is still highly nutritious and is therefore reused as animal feed.

The third photo shows “Blue Sky and Sea Beer,” which is also brewed at Helios Distillery’s Sawa-uchi Brewery in Iwate Prefecture!
This beer is made using meltwater from the snow in Nishiwaga Town, one of the snowiest areas in Iwate Prefecture.
Even when brewing the same beer style, Weizen, the difference in brewing water—mineral-rich water from Okinawa versus the water used in Iwate—creates a distinctly different flavor.
That’s what makes brewing so fascinating!
Our Helios Online Shop also offers a special tasting set featuring Weizen beers from both Okinawa and Iwate.
We hope you’ll enjoy exploring the fascinating world of craft beer by tasting and comparing the two!
