Iisōgachi dēbiru!
(Happy New Year!)

Welcome to the Helios Distillery Kōshū-gura Shop.

Today marks New Year’s Day according to the traditional lunar calendar.

In Okinawa, the New Year is known as “Sōgwachi.” Unlike New Year’s celebrations based on the Gregorian calendar, Okinawa’s traditional New Year has its own unique atmosphere, with a quiet and heartwarming sense of celebration deeply rooted in local culture.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some of Okinawa’s Lunar New Year traditions, along with the special drinks and festive fukubukuro lucky bags from Helios Distillery—crafted with a deep connection to Okinawan culture and traditions.

A Drink That Honors Tradition While Opening the Door to New Ways of Enjoying ItWe invite you to take your time and discover the rich traditions and culture behind this special drink.

What Is “Sōgwachi,” the Okinawan Lunar New Year?

The Lunar New Year falls on the first day of the first month of the traditional lunar calendar. In Okinawa, many communities continue to preserve the tradition of celebrating the Lunar New Year to this day.

In areas where fishing has long been an important part of local life, the Lunar New Year is especially significant, with traditions passed down through generations to pray for abundant catches and safe voyages.

It is a time when families come together to wish for good health and prosperity in the year ahead.

This is Sōgwachi, the Okinawan Lunar New Year.

Wakimizu and Uchanuku

On the morning of the Lunar New Year, wakimizu, or “new water,” is drawn. It is believed to embody the vitality of the new year and is offered as a prayer for the health and well-being of the family.

There is also uchanuku, a traditional Okinawan offering that resembles kagami mochi, the stacked rice cakes associated with the Japanese New Year. Its round shape symbolizes wishes for harmony and happiness within the family.

These offerings are presented to the Hinukan, the traditional household hearth deity that has been revered in Okinawa for generations.

What Is a Hinukan?

Hinukan is the Okinawan god of fire, traditionally believed to reside in the kitchen of the home. Often regarded as a guardian of the household hearth, Hinukan is believed to watch over the health, well-being, and prosperity of the family.

The idea that a deity resides in the place where daily meals are prepared is a natural part of traditional Okinawan life and culture.

Alcohol, too, has long been a part of bringing people together around the table and enriching shared meals and celebrations. Perhaps this is why Okinawan spirits and brewing traditions have always been so closely connected to everyday life.

Helios Distillery: A Tradition Rooted in Okinawan Culture

Helios Distillery was founded in 1961 in Nago, Okinawa. Guided by founder Tadashi Matsuda’s belief that “spirits should be made from crops grown in the land where they are produced,” the distillery has continued to craft beverages that make the most of Okinawa’s local ingredients.

Okinawa’s unique landscape, climate, and the lives of its people—all come together in every bottle.

That commitment to expressing the spirit of Okinawa in every sip remains unchanged, more than 60 years after the distillery was founded.

The Challenge of Crafting Rum

In fact, Helios Distillery was the first distillery in Okinawa to produce Okinawa-made rum. With its warm climate and abundant sugarcane, Okinawa offers ideal conditions for rum production.

Helios crafts a diverse range of rums using traditional methods, the agricole method, and Okinawa’s own distinctive kokuto (Okinawan brown sugar). Each style has its own unique character, capturing the essence of Okinawa’s natural environment in every sip.

At the aging cellars in Kyoda, Nago, rum spirits quietly rest in oak barrels to this day. As they slowly mature in the gentle sea breeze of Okinawa, they develop greater depth and complexity over time.

Each drop is filled with the gift of time.

“Farm to Glass”

Helios Distillery’s guiding philosophy is “Farm to Glass — Bringing a Great Drink from the Fields to Your Glass.”

Sugarcane, brown sugar, grains, fruit—the rich bounty nurtured by Okinawa’s land is at the heart of Helios Distillery’s craft. By carefully preserving the unique character of these local ingredients and bringing out their best qualities, Helios creates spirits that express the essence of Okinawa.

This is more than simply a production process. It is also a way of preserving Okinawa’s culture and passing it on to future generations.

Just as people draw wakimizu, or “new water,” and offer it to the Hinukan at the Lunar New Year, Helios hopes its drinks can become a natural part of everyday life—bringing people closer to the land and traditions of Okinawa.

That spirit is reflected in every drink crafted by Helios Distillery.

A New Year Begins

Sōgwachi, the Okinawan Lunar New Year, is a time to wish for the health and prosperity of family and loved ones. It is also an opportunity to pause, reflect on the year that has passed, and look ahead to the year to come.

Why not raise a glass born in Okinawa around the New Year’s table?

Whether it’s rum that captures the gentle breeze of Nago, aged awamori that has matured over many years, or distinctive Habushu with its unique Okinawan character, each drink can bring a special touch of flavor and warmth to the beginning of a new year.
